Goin’ Down That Long, Lonesome Road, Part II

In an obvious but doomed attempt to keep pace with the Western world’s “comfortable-retail shopping-as-life’s-ultimate-goal” philosophy, i noticed huge construction projects looming up behind the crumbling roadside corrugated metal shoeboxes now serving as the center of commerce. these are clearly intended to be the New, Shining Examples of Consumerism We All Enjoy So Much In The West.

mega-plazas and malls. Meanwhile, the whole county is a smoking trash pile. But let’s put up some mega malls. That ought to make things better.

Even more jarringly inconceivable were the hordes of billboards we met as we approached the precincts of Vrindavan. Giant apartment complexes with names like “Hare Krishna Orchid” and “Krishna Greens” now offer vacationers from Delhi “all modern comforts.” The whole place was a construction boom. And when I say “boom,” I mean that no amount of dynamite seemed to have been spared to blast unwanted structures out of the way to make space for the new proliferation of condos.

“Krishna enjoyed here five thousand years ago. Now it’s your turn,” proclaimed one sign. I couldn’t help but wonder how this was Krishna’s plan.
